Feast on the Cheap is a collaborative effort between professional caterer Mary Anne Rittenhouse and her daughter Mariel, who is just learning the joys - and frustrations - of home cooking. The site shares Mary Anne's most popular catering recipes for at-home entertaining, as well as Mariel's low-cost and quick dishes tailor-made for tiny kitchens. Expensive ingredients are swapped out for cheaper alternatives and the cost of each recipe is pre-calculated for easy reference.

Mariel here. I literally cannot stop making soup. A close friend of mine from college subsists on a steady diet of broth and I’m starting to understand her craze for the crockpot. So, as you’ve probably guessed, I’m sharing yet another...

Mary Anne here. In years past, I haven’t had great luck when it came to preparing a homemade stock from the carcass of our Thanksgiving turkey. For whatever reason, my mom’s chicken stock (from her Matzo Ball Soup) works...

Mary Anne here. After stuffing our Thanksgiving gourds and then relishing 10PM sandwiches piled high with turkey, stuffing, cranberry chutney and even sweet potatoes (a la Mariel – and a new combo for me!), it’s time to make thorough use...
Mariel here. No one does Thanksgiving quite like my mother. She has dutifully (and painstakingly) transcribed our family’s favorite recipes, even including a suspicious new addition (Brussel Sprouts?!) that she assures me is worthy of a spot on our...

Mary Anne here. This recipe is incredibly simple to prepare and can be made through step 3 up to two days before. The sweet potatoes are Mariel’s favorite part of the meal and I seriously think I would be in big, big trouble if they...
I'm a little biased (naturally) but my daughter and I (we're the co-creators) continually update Feast on the Cheap with new wallet-friendly menu options. We also focus specifically on creating lavish-tasting, but cost-effective dishes for entertaining at home. All of the meals on the blog are broken down by cost-per-ingredient, cost-per-person and cost-per-dish so that you go into the grocery store well-aware of how much you'll be spending.
