  Juan Cole's encyclopedic knowledge of Middle Eastern history puts him in a unique position to summarize the unfolding political drama in what is arguably the most volatile part of the world (after Africa). His criticism of US foreign policy is not at all polemical. Cole is the ideal academic: intellectually honest, and socially engaged.
