Why I Despise Conventional Wisdom

Oct 2, 2008
1. It says one should lead a balanced life. Who defines that balance? And what the hell does it mean? 2. It is not wisdom. It is just convention. And convention often boils down to doing things the way they have always been done simply because they are...

The Case For Accidental Companies…..And The People Who Run Them

Aug 21, 2008
When I was a young man, I met ice cream impresario Tom Carvel: widely credited as the entrepreneur who created big league franchising.

In Search of Idiot Savants Consider Rain Man.

Nov 19, 2009
We are all amazed and distressed by this odd creature masquerading as a part human/part mystery. We know him as more than the character played by Dustin Hoffman in the exceptional Barry Levinson opus. He is symbolic of the weird science creation we...

On The Planets Of "Yes" And "No." A Tale Of Two Worlds.

Nov 12, 2009
It is widely believed that “yes” and “no” are simply two sides of the same coin. But the truth is, they are worlds apart. The reason lies in the fact that they are more than words: they are in the case of “yes,” a pathway to action. And in the case of...

All The King's Sycophants

Nov 4, 2009
The other day I listened to a journalist, of sorts, bragging that he played golf recently with the President of the United States. Wonderful for the reporter’s ego. Terrible for journalism. Of course, favored journalists have always enjoyed special...

Mark in today's New York Times Frequent Flier column

Nov 3, 2009
Check out Mark Stevens in today’s New York Times Frequent Flier column: You Can’t Judge a Seatmate by His Foot-Stomping Published: November 2, 2009 “I LOVE flying. Maybe that’s because I go into it with the expectation that I’m going to be delayed....

Henry Kissinger: Wonder Of Marketing

Oct 28, 2009
Most of my adult life he has been there, on the television screen–horn-rimmed glasses, thick German accent, steely eyes– opining on the sweep of human events: war, plague, genocide, coups, peace and detente. Most of my adult life I have not understood...

See yourself as successful. See yourself as the one left standing because you kept pushing. As my late father always said......"Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps." It works!!! Take responsibility for your own actions and move on. Karen T

You couldn't be more correct! Living a "no-excuses" life and taking 100% responsibility for our actions causes leadership qualities to come out and guide us on the very paths we need to be on. Bottom Line: We can do anything we as a society put our minds to, and will continue to do so with or without a "Hero" from a leader. We will always appreciate what is offered by those who are truly the exceptional, but to hope for ONE to take us to a new level, for one is putting way too much expectation on them, and excusing ourselves from making things happen that we have for so long anyway.

Mark's blog and writing in general is a breath of fresh air for serious marketers in the "age of accountability." It is not for lightweights who just want to keep their jobs. It is for dedicated professionals who see their work as a significant factor in the success of the companies for whom they work.
