Weirdest billboard ever

Aug 8, 2009
Not photoshopped, I took it myself. The site is real. I'm trying to imagine someone driving along Highway 11 and making a note of this. For what? The next time someone gets bludgeoned in...

Is marketing an art or a science?

May 27, 2009
It's both, and that's the problem. Some marketers are scientists. They test and measure. They do the math. They understand the impact of that spend in that market at that time with that message....

Nostalgia is a basic human emotion

May 23, 2009
Kodak created a billion dollar industry by giving people a tool to feed their nostalgia. We don't take pictures because we want to know what we're seeing now... we already know that. We take...

Your brand is not your logo

Oct 25, 2008
Smart marketers understand that a new logo can't possibly increase your market share, and they know that an expensive logo doesn't defeat a cheap logo. They realize that the logo is like a first name, it's an identifier.

Time

Here's the #1 most overlooked secret of marketing, of growing your organization, of building trust and creating for the long haul. Actually, it has two parts:

How to lose an argument online

Nov 23, 2009
Have an argument. Once you start an argument, not a discussion, you've already lost. Think about it: have you ever changed your mind because someone online started yelling at you? They might get you to shut up, but it's unlikely they've actually...

The magic rule of seven (and the banality of alphabetical order)

Nov 22, 2009
If you approve or create online forms or deal with consumer interactions, I hope you'll think about the following: 1. If you have more than seven items in a pull down list, you have failed. Human beings have no trouble keeping seven ideas in their...

Benefit of the doubt

Nov 21, 2009
It's almost impossible to communicate something clearly and succinctly to everyone, all the time. So misunderstandings occur. We misunderstand a comment or a gesture or a policy or a contract. And then what happens? Well, if we're engaged with...

The amateur scientist (that's us)

Nov 20, 2009
Many people buy a car (probably their single biggest discretionary purchase) based on slamming a door, kicking a tire and judging the handshake of a salesperson. We choose a surgeon based on the carpeting in his office and a politician by his hair...

Embracing lifetime value

Nov 19, 2009
If you walk into a company-owned cell phone store to sign up for a contract, what are you worth? Given the huge gross margins at AT&T and Verizon and the standard two-year contract, I think it's easy to figure on more than $2000 in lifetime value. If...

great
Although I own, and have been known to even quote at times, some of his books.... his blog postings are hit-or-miss. For instance, he's had a few recent postings on the importance of services like twitter, however, he doesn't use twitter. Overall though, it's typically a good read..
