Closing Day Approaches; I Whine About Looming Fly Fishing Choices

Nov 11, 2009
It’s Day 77 of the Underground’s Home Hostage Crisis, and no, it hasn’t escaped the Underground’s notice that if he can hit a tiny, fast-moving clay disk with a shotgun, a fleeing contractor wouldn’t offer much challenge. Just saying is...

For Those Trying to Squeak In One More McCloud Trip Before Closing Day…

Nov 10, 2009
With California’s general trout season almost over (15th), fly fishermen all over the state are no doubt considering one last run at the McCloud River – or some other favorite water. Frankly, it’s a great idea – but bring foul weather gear, because...

After We Rid The World of the Orange Flying Menace, We Confront Another – The October Caddis

Sadly, you’re not looking at any photographs from the Underground’s sporting clays experience (at Clear Creek in Corning, a course I liked). That’s because I was absorbed enough by the shoot that I forgot fire off a few frames on the camera. With...

This guy makes me want to hit the water (with a fly rod that is). His articles are honest, funny, and articulate. Hell, I'd love to have the imagination he exhibits in this blog. Tom isn't the only good writer on the net, but damn, it's refreshing to know that functioning brain cells do exist - even if he jokingly says less than this of himself. Really, I'm fishing again. I realized that I don't really need a good reason to treat myself to the Almighty's grand streams and rivers. The Underground is indeed worth the subscription to it's posts on Twitter. Thanks Tom.   Makes me want to fish every time I read it. Not just "fly fishing porn," Tom makes sure to post what is relevant, like threats to our waters, threats to the fish, industry hype, and most importantly the experience of being on the water. The blog isn't about selling anything, or giving reports. It's about that deep itch we have to be out there on the water without being crowded by other fisherman's egos, gear lust paranoia, or wilderness destroying corporate encroachment. Its all well written, in good humor, and has relevance to more than just fishing, what more could you want.

Trout Underground is a superb combination of irreverent obserbations on fly fishing and serious conservation oriented content. While the majority of focus on the waters of Northern California there is still plenty of attention given to the Rocky Mountains, Southeastern US, and even Europe.

Lighthearted prose about fly fishing and the perils of living near good trout fishing. Elements of satire, conservation, and life in the woods. Enjoyable reading for fishermen and non fishermen alike.
