The phenomenon that is American Idol started way back in June of 2002. Who knew it would last this long and
spawn such singing sensations as
Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, David Cook and
Jennifer Hudson? American Idol works like this: The show travels all over America and holds open auditions and anyone (seriously, anyone) can come in and audition. If you make it past the first two tough mini-auditions then you get to meet and sing in front of the shows judges. And Be On TV!!
Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson have been granting or crushing wannabe singers dreams since the beginning. Cowell tells the harsh truth that can come off as mean, but really funny because it's the truth. Abdul has a softer approach with her convoluted words of encouragement. Jackson has his "Dwag" catchphrase that either means your great or you suck.
For 2009, a new judge joins the Big 3, Kara DioGuardi. If you get past the judges you get to hear those beautiful words, "You're Going to Hollywood!" Once in Hollywood, the judges eliminate more singers until only the Top 12 are left. The fate of the Top 12 is left up to the American public, who vote for their favorites. The winner of American Idol gets a contract and thousands of screaming fans. The Hollywood Dream.
