
Garry Marshall directed the Academy award-nominated drama Beaches which is now viewed as the quintessential "chick flick." Released in 1988 by Buena Vista Pictures. Its principal song "Wind Beneath My Wings" became a huge hit and won Grammys for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The film was produced by Bonnie Bruckheimer, Bette Midler, and Margaret South.
The screenplay was written by Mary Agnes Donoghue from Iris Rainer Dart's novel of the same name. Bette Midler starred as singer CC Bloom and Barbara Hersey was Hillary Whitney, a human rights lawyer. The movie tracks the path of the two childhood friends through tribulations concerning men, careers, divorce and childbirth. It grossed $57 million.
