In 1998, Oprah Winfrey joined forces with director Jonathan Demme to bring Toni Morrison's best novel "Beloved" to the big screen. The screenplay, adapted by Akosua Busia, Richard LaGravenese and Adam Brooks, deals with the appearance of a naive child-like girl called Beloved and her impact on a family of former slaves. Winfrey stars as the matriarch of the family and Thandie Newton plays Beloved. Danny Glover and Beah Richards also star in the drama. Produced by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, the film made just $22.5 million at the box office with an estimated production cost of $53 million. Winfrey bought the rights to the book in 1987 before it won the Pulitizer Prize. It took her 10 years to make the film after reading the book. Ironically, Thandie Newton's African first name means beloved.
