Gordon Merchant set out to find the perfect wave in Australia and instead he found a new home and the inspiration to bring innovation to the sport of surfing. He was the first to design a surfboard with a tucked undergate and also the first to develop the leg-rope. Along the way he started designing boardshorts that would withstand the harsh elements found in surfing. Billabong was born.
Gordon put all his energy into the company and soon was gaining ground against major competitors. By the 1980s, Billabong went international. Today the company has gone beyond surfing and now also caters to the snowboarders, divers, and skateboarders.
The brand and style appeal greatly to the younger crowd, male and female. The companies sponsorship of athletes in these sports has made Billabong one of the top companies and has grown in popularity around the world.
