Sogo Ishii directed the Japanese science fiction punk rock musical Burst City. The film was released in 1982. Burst City spotlights punk rock bands such as The Roosters, The Rockers, and The Stalin. The film captures the attitude and culture of the punk rock scene in Japan from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s. Toei studio distributed the film. Critics and audiences hold the film in high regard because of its high energy style and innovation. Another reason why the film is so popular is because it is inspired by the punk aesthetic. Burst City was finally released on DVD in June 2006 by Discotek.
