Call of Duty is a World War II based, first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. Launched in 2003, it utilized the established Quake 3 engine to drive its graphics. The single player mode was divided into three campaigns divided amongst the Allied nations of the war: the American campaign where you take on the role of a soldier participating in the Normandy
invasion, the British campaign involving sabotage behind enemy lines in France, and the Soviet campaign during the Battle of Stalingrad and the liberation of Poland. Players could not only take command of individual troops but also large vehicles including tanks.
One rather unique aspect of the single player missions occurs when computer-controlled allies come to your aid to help complete quest objectives. This feature was to provide a historically immersive experience as soldiers during the war were often a part of larger groups. The game also featured “shellshock” to simulate the chaos and confusion after an explosion took place too close to a soldier. Multiplayer mode is also available including the standard deathmatch, capture the flag, and free-for-all.
The Call of Duty series received critical and commercial success after its release spawning multiple sequels on a variety of platforms. It also added to the increasingly saturated market for World War II games.
