Chery is an automobile manufacturer headquartered in Wuhu, in China’s Anhui province. Founded in 1997, the name Chery was supposed to be a transliteration of the Chinese “Qirui” but the mistake ended up being retained by the company. Chery is a government-owned enterprise but is scheduled to be privatized.
There has been some controversy that Chery has been pirating foreign car designs, notably the GM Daewoo Matiz and the Magnus.
