CHiPs was an action television series that ran from 1977 to 1983 and originally aired on the ABC network. Running a total of 139 episodes over six seasons, the show dealt with the exploits of tho California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers, hence the name “Chips.” The show made a star out of Erik Estrada who played Officer Frank (Ponch) Poncherello in one of the rare instances a Hispanic American was given star billing on a television show in the 1970s. That popularity however would not extend much beyond the show’s end.
Contrary to what the show portrayed, CHP motorcycle officers don’t actually ride in pairs.
