Derek Lamar Fisher was born August 9, 1974 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Drafted by the
Los Angeles Lakers, he was the 24th pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. During his rookie season, Fisher played in 80 games, averaging 3.9 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists a game. He also played in the Schick Rookie Game during All-Star Weekend in Cleveland. He scored 16 points and had 6 assists. Fisher spent his first 8 seasons with the Lakers and was a critical part of the 3-time NBA Championship team from 2000 to 2002. He subsequently played for the
Golden State Warriors and the
Utah Jazz before returning to the Lakers in 2007. His return to Los Angeles was due in part to his daughters rare eye condition, retinoblastoma. He felt that she would get better care in LA where more technology was available for treatment. Fisher married his wife, Candace Fisher, in July of 2006.
