Final Fantasy is a game series and media franchise created by Square Software in 1987. Originally starting out as a video game for the old Nintendo and Famicom systems, Final Fantasy has branched out into other forms of media including motion pictures, musical soundtracks, and toy merchandise. Although each individual game and movie has an independent storyline, they all contain elements that are common to the Final Fantasy theme.
The Final Fantasy universe itself is a combination of modern science fiction and fantasy motifs. Magic and technology are seamlessly combined together in a battle torn world that is in desperate need of heroes. The main protagonist is often a stoic young man deeply affected by the chaos and despair surrounding him. Eventually as more of the characters and the story are introduced, the end result will always be some kind of save-the-world from a god-type creature quest. The actual game play contains RPG elements where you command a party of characters that must be leveled up in order to face the progressively more powerful creatures you encounter. The original Final Fantasy battle system was fairly simple, but that has given way to more developed and evolved fight controls to provide modern gamers with a greater challenge. The current installment is Final Fantasy XII with more sequels on the way.
