The Escape is a compact SUV built by
Ford Motor Company. First introduced in 2000, it was jointly developed by
Mazda and shares the common
Ford CD2 platform. In Europe it is known as the
Ford Maverick. The Escape was built in response to the realization that most SUV owners do not take their vehicles off-roading. Thus only modest off-roading capabilities are built in but an optional locking rear-differential is available in earlier models.
Power is provided by a range of engine options starting at a 3.0L I4, a 2.3L I4, and a 3.0L V6. Transmission options include a 5
speed manual or 4
speed automatic transmission. The Escape is also available in a Hybrid version that is 75% more fuel efficient and has the distinction of being the first SUV available with hybrid technology.
