The Explorer is a mid-size SUV built by Ford Motor and sold in North America. First introduced in 1990, it holds a place in history by playing a key part in turning SUVs from merely an enthusiast car to one of the most popular vehicles found on the road. While extremely popular in the U.S., it has met with mixed success overseas. The Explorer is currently in its fourth generational design phase.
Power is currently provided by either a 4.0L V6 or a 4.6L V8 mated to a 5 or 6 speed automatic transmission. Special edition Explorers are available for law enforcement agencies and emergency services.
