Mary Shelley created the literary character known as Frankenstein. The novel’s full title is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The name Frankenstein refers to the scientist who creates life, Victor Frankenstein. The creature Victor creates is misnamed Frankenstein. In the novel the creature has no name.
The novel contains elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement. The novel was also a warning to modern man against over-reaching during the Industrial Revolution. Frankenstein has been adapted for the big screen. Boris Karloff's is the most memorable on-screen portrayal. The on-screen adaptation was directed by James Whale and produced by Carl Laemmle in 1931. A comedic take on Frankenstein was produced in 1974 by Mel Brooks. It was titled Young Frankenstein. The following year saw the release of a radically different take on the Frankenstein story in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
