Gamera's first appearance was in the only black and white film in the series. Gamera is a giant, flying turtle that appeared in a series of monster movies. Gamera is a Japanese icon popular with audiences of all ages.

In America, Gamera gained popularity during the 1970s on television stations featuring Saturday afternoon matinee showcases. Gamera is a tortoise from a prehistoric species who feeds on flames. He is awakened by an atomic blast in the Arctic during a dogfight between U.S. and Russian forces. Most of the films in the series were directed by Noriaki Yuasa and written by Nisan Takahashi. The films were a huge success with children.
