William Cutting known as "Bill the Butcher" organizes the "Native Americans" into a gang to take on the Irish and they in turn form their own gang called, "The Dead Rabbits". During a bloody clash Bill leaves the leader of the Rabbits dead on the streets. Years later his son Amsterdam returns to exact revenge on Bill for his father's death. He infiltrates Bill's organization and becomes a trusted assistant of his, but just before making his movie things spiral out of control.
