Many things happened in 1969, but nothing like the opening of the very first Gap store in San Francisco. OK, maybe it's not one of the most historical happenings of the year, but in the world of clothing retail, it is a big deal. Today Gap is one the biggest retailers around, which include
Old Navy and
Banana Republic, with over 3,000 stores and generating millions of dollars in profit. The clothes are simple. Nothing extravagant, nothing high fashion, but simply T-shirts and jeans.
While T-shirt and jeans are the signature look for the retailer, the collection also contains colorful designs for men, women, children and babies. The Gap's advertising campaign has attracted countless celebrities including Amy Phoeler,
John Mayer, Sarah Silverman, and Amanda Pete. Their print ads are easy to spot with their portrait like style and celebrities wearing colorful Gap clothes. A few years ago, the company heavily advertised on TV with their catchy (and annoying) ads featuring young people singing or dancing.
These days, print and pictures seems to be the ad campaign of choice for the clothing giant. The Gap doesn't seem to have a lack in celebrities willing to put on Gap clothes and represent the company. Some celebrities have even posed with their children or families. This is a sure sign, Gap is firmly emended in pop culture and seen as a staple of the fashion world.
