Franco Zeffirelli directed this version of Hamlet which was widely released on January 18, 1991 by Warner Brothers Studio. It was the first film of Icon Productions which was co-founded by Mel Gibson. Dyson Lovell produced the film and Franco Zeffirelli and Christopher DeVore wrote the screenplay. The movie starred Mel Gibson as Hamlet, Glenn Close as his mother Queen Gertrude, Alan Bates as his uncle Claudius, and Paul Scofield as the ghost of his father. Three of the actors, Scofield, Bates, and Ian Holm, had played Hamlet on the stage or in the movies. The film grossed $20 million.
