2008 Golden Globe Award winning comedic drama Happy-Go-Lucky was written and directed by Mike Leigh. Sally Hawkins received a Silver Berlin Bear award for best actress for her performance as Poppy, an eternally optimistic primary school teacher whose happiness is continually challenged by the world around her. As the film opens, Poppy's bike is stolen and she decides to take driving lessons, where her optimistic personality clashes with that of her extremely cynical instructor. Poppy's happiness and optimism are challenged to increasing degrees as the movie progresses. This film takes a hard and yet surprisingly lighthearted look into just how difficult it can be to maintain one's sense of happiness in a trying and uncertain world.
