Steve McQueen directed the 2008 drama Hunger. Michael Fassbender stars as Bobby Sands. The film also stars Liam Cunningham and Stuart Graham. The script was written by Enda Walsh and Steve McQueen. Hunger was produced by Laura Hastings-Smith and Robin Gutch was released by Icon Entertainment in the U.S. on December 5, 2008. The film accounts the real-life events revolving around the last six weeks of Bobby Sands during the 1981 Irish hunger strike, which was the culmination of a five-year long protest against the British government for withdrawing special category status for parliamentary prisoners. Although the film only earned $3,561 dollars domestically, it garnered $2.3 million worldwide. It was well-received by critics, being named the 3rd best film of 2008 by L.A. Weekly and the best film of the year by Sight and Sound Magazine. Hunger was also the first film to be made my a debut filmmaker to win the Camera d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival.
