Martin McDonagh wrote and directed the 2008 film In Bruges. The film stars Colin Farrel, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Clemence Poesy, Jordan Prentice, Thekla Reuten, and Jeremie Renier. The film’s locale is the Belgian city of Bruges. In Bruges opened the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. The movie contains references to Don’t Look Now and Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter. The film was released on January 17, 2008 to favorable reviews. Film critic Roger Ebert gave the movie high praise saying, “This film debut by the theater, writer, and director Martin McDonagh is an endlessly surprising, very dark, human comedy, with a plot that cannot be foreseen but only relished.” In Bruges was nominated for seven awards by the British Independent Film Awards.
