The undergarment company was started in 1876 by a retired minister named Samuel T. Cooper. He set out to help suffering lumberjacks from blisters caused by their cheap wool socks. A hosiery business was born. At the turn of the 20th century Cooper and his sons introduced their high quality underwear to the public and due to high demand they had to buy a new underwear factory (which was the largest in the world at the time).
In 1934 the company introduced a new and strange new underwear called "the brief". This design was a radical in that it provided men with more "masculine support" than any other underwear on the market. The design provided that support through what we call a jock strap and called the new product, the Jockey. Soon after its introduction the Jockey sold out fast and that success has lasted to this day. That style of underwear still remains one of the most popular among men.
Not to be forgotten, Jockey began making undergarments for women in 1982 with the help of Jockey's first female CEO and the women's line has been the most successful venture since the brief was introduced many decades earlier.
