Premiere magazine ranked McClane as 46 of the 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time. McClane is based on the fictional character detective Joe Leland from Roderick Thorp's novel Nothing Lasts Forever. He is also based on Frank Malone from Walter H. Wager's novel 58 Minutes. He has also been described as a Dirty Harry-type American cowboy. McClane's wife is Holly Gennero, and his children are Lucy Gennero-McClane and John McClane, Jr.
