She broke onto the scene in 1997 with the worldwide success of the hit
Titanic, in which she played the character Rose. The movie was an epic love story between her character and that of
Leonardo DiCaprio, which centered around a scene in which DiCaprio’s character sketched her in the nude wearing a precious diamond. The movie went on to become the most successful movie of all-time. The movie garnered her great fame and her second Oscar nomination at only the age of 22.
She is a critic’s darling, garnering many awards and nominations. As of 2008, she has a total of five Academy Award nominations. She has even had success as a singer, contributing many songs to her movies, and even being considered for the lead in the musical Moulin Rouge. The part would eventually go to actress
Nicole Kidman.
In 2003, she married director Sam Mendes and the two now have a son. She would later re-team with her
Titanic co-star and friend DiCaprio in 2008 in the film Revolutionary Road, directed by her husband, Sam Mendes.
