Lenovo - Computer Hardware

Lenovo image Lenovo is the world’s fourth largest personal computer manufacturer and the largest in its home market, China. The company was originally founded in 1984 in Beijing by eleven engineers and was known as Legend Group Ltd. Its operations over the next few years would be based out of Hong Kong due to business connections and a better overall environment for financing. Assistance was still received by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the mainland however who was eager to develop Legend into an IT powerhouse. The company would eventually adopt the name “Lenovo” which is a combination of the original Legend name, “le” and “novo” which is pseudo-Latin for “new.” The name change came from numerous conflicts with trademarks registered in the West as well a general company overhaul.

Lenovo became prominent on the world stage in 2005 when it acquired IBM’s personal computer division for $1.27 billion. The purchase would give Lenovo control of the famous Thinkpad brand name.

Besides personal computers and servers, Lenovo also manufactures imaging equipment, mobile phones, and provides general information technology services. China is especially eager to develop the company further so that it can take its place amongst the hi-tech conglomerates of the world.
