The 1999 West End musical Mamma Mia was adapted for the big screen in 2008. The musical and film are based on songs by the pop group ABBA. The film had its world premiere on June 30, 2008. The box office gross earned over half a billion dollars. Principal filming took place on the small Greek island of Skopelos between August and September 2007. The monumental success of Mamma Mia: The Movie may result in a sequel.
