The Metal Gear series, developed by Konami, was one of the early pioneers in the stealth game genre. It subsequently went on to legitimize the style of game play through its numerous sequels. In contrast to most games where the objective is to kill everything you see, stealth games require that you actually remain out of sight and employ tactics and subterfuge to accomplish your mission. Letting the enemy detect your presence will not allow you to complete the game. This style of play is ideal for games with military or espionage related themes. In Metal Gear, you take on the role of Solid Snake, an elite commando skilled in infiltrating enemy compounds, sabotage, intelligence gathering, and assassination. The term “metal gear” refers to an enemy super weapon under development which Snake must destroy at all costs.
The original Metal Gear released for the old MSX2 computer in 1987 and subsequently for the NES is considered a classic if extremely challenging game. Metal Gear’s popularity took off when released for the Playstation 1 as Metal Gear Solid. The Metal Gear Solid series proved so big that it single-handedly was capable of driving console sales. Further sequels followed on the PS2 and PS3.
