In 2004, "Miracle," starring Kurt Russell and directed by Gavin O'Connor, was released by Buena Vista Studios.
The film, based on true events, celebrated the journey of the 1980 United States Olympic ice hockey team in its quest for the gold medal. It chronicles the rise of Coach Herb Brooks (played by Russell) and his team of players who win several hard-fought games to get to the final round. There, they face the heavily-favored team from Russia, but their hard work and determination come to a climax in the battle.
"Miracle" won an ESPY award in 2004 as the Best Sports Movie of the year. Although the real Herb Brooks died a year before the film was released, it was dedicated to his memory.
