
Miss Marple, also known as Jane Marple, was created by Agatha Christie. The fictional character appeared in twelve of Christie’s crime novels. She is one of Christie's most popular characters, along with
Hercule Poirot. Miss Marple is a spinster and amateur detective; she lives in St. Mary Mead village. She has also been portrayed on-screen.
Her first appearance in literature was in The Royal Magazine in December 1927; she appeared in the short story titled The Tuesday Night Club. Her first appearance in a novel was in The Murder of the Vicarage. Her last appearance in a novel was in Sleeping Murder. Sleeping Murder was written around 1940, but published in 1976. Miss Marple was first portrayed on-screen by Margaret Rutherford. She was subsequently portrayed by Angela Lansbury, Ita Ever, Helen Hayes, and Bengali actress Rakhee. Miss Marple has also appeared on television and radio.
