Oprah Winfrey is a famous American television personality and one of the world’s most powerful women. She began her career as a news anchor at a local station in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1983, Winfrey began what would become the Oprah Winfrey Show. The show was an instant success, quickly surpassing Donahue as the highest rated talk show on television. Since then, the show has grown exponentially. Winfrey herself has made over 2.7 billion dollars with her vast media empire which extends from television into magazines, books, and radio. She is watched by millions of viewers year after year, and she has become one of the most influential and important African-American figures of all-time.
In her personal life, she has been connected to the likes of Roger Ebert and Stedman Graham. She has also made many important friendships with such figures as Maya Angelou and Gayle King. Throughout her career Winfrey has wrestled publicly with a weight problem that had been in excess of 238 pounds. Her struggle and subsequent success with her problems have only served to further endear her to her growing public.
