Paul Kersey is the protagonist in the Death Wish film series. Charles Bronson portrayed Paul Kersey in all five films in the series. The first film, Death Wish, was based on the novel by Brian Garfield and directed by Michael Winner. Winner directed the first three films in the series.
Paul Kersey is an architect who resides in New York City. He also served in the Korean War in the medical corps. Three street punks break into his apartment when he is not at home, and beat up his wife and rape his daughter. His wife dies from her injuries and his daughter remains in a catatonic state. The murder of Kersey's wife and sexual assault of his daughter, drive him to become a vigilante. Despite being criticized for advocating vigilantism, the first film was a commercial success. There were plans for a remake of the original Death Wish movie with Sylvester Stallong directing and starring as Kersey. But on December 20, 2006 Stallone announced he would not be making the remake after all.
