Philosophy cosmetics line got its start as a medically-based skincare company called Bio-Medic. Bio-Medic products were specifically designed to be sold to cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists. Eventually Bio-Medic's founder, Cristina Carlino, utilized the years of research and high tech formulations of the Bio-Medic line to start Philosophy. The Philosophy brand is much less specialized than the original Bio-Medic brand, and has enjoyed broad popularity.
Philosophy cosmetics feature containers decorated with inspirational messages. Their most popular line of skincare products is the Hope moisturizing line, featuring such products as "Hope In a Bottle" and "When Hope Is Not Enough". Philosophy's philosophy is "the best cosmetic is great looking skin", therefore, the focus of the skincare line is to promote healthy skin. Their make up line boasts natural looking products. Philosophy does not promote their products with any celebrity spokes models, but does rely heavily on word of mouth recommendations, which the company prides itself in.
