Pokemon is a popular children’s entertainment franchise owned and operated by Nintendo. Created in 1995, Pokemon includes a collection of role-playing video games, a trading-card game, toy merchandise, and even a successful television show.
The action centers around collectible “Pokemon” who are creatures with special abilities who are then squared off against other Pokemon in special battles. The Pokemon themselves are captured in the wild or won off other Pokemon trainers in tournament battles. The toy’s motto is “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!” in recognition of the goal of every trainer to try to capture as many Pokemon as possible as well as become the best trainer in the world. The concept arose from Pokemon’s executive director, Satoshi Tajiri-Oniwa who enjoyed collecting insects when he was a child. When Pokemon was first released, it became a sensation with children and has left an indelible mark on pop culture. Popular shows and movies have now referenced or spoofed Pokemon in some way. Pokemon artwork is commonly seen in advertising. Pokemon has even attracted controversy with some religious groups objecting to the toy’s violent themes as well as its concept of evolution(training Pokemon results in them “evolving” into a more powerful form).
