Writer David Auburn adapted his Pulitzer Prize winning play to film, with co-writer Rebecca Miller, in 2006's "Proof". John Madden directed the drama which starred Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal and Hope Davis. Paltrow played the daughter who took care of her brilliant but mentally unbalanced mathematician father (Hopkins) before his death. She claimed to have written a revolutionary theorem, much to the disbelief of a young researcher (Gyllenhaal) and her sister (Davis). Produced by Alison Owen and Jeff Sharp, the film made just $7.5 million at the box office. The production budget was $20 million. Paltrow originally portrayed the role of the daughter in the London production of the play.
