
A mentally challenged black man unites a Southern town in 2003's "Radio", directed by Michael Tollin. The screenplay, by Mike Rich, is based on the true story of a high school football coach, played by Ed Harris, who takes Radio, a handicapped man, under his wing in 1976 Anderson, South Carolina. Radio is played by Cuba Gooding Jr. Through his work with coach and football team, Radio becomes an inspiration for all the townspeople.
The film was produced by Herb Gains, Brian Robbins, and Michael Tollin and was made on a $35 million budget and grossed $52 million at the box office. The character Radio's real name is James Robert Kennedy.
