
Known for robbing the rich to give to the poor, Robin Hood is an archetypal figure in English folklore. Robin Hood fights injustice and tyranny, and is supported by a band of sixty outlawed yeomen known as Merry Men. The Merry Men live in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. Some of Robin Hood’s associations are Little John, Maid Marian, and Friar Tuck. Robin Hood’s chief nemesis is the sheriff of Nottingham.
Robin Hood has appeared in films, television series, comics, plays, and animation. Robin Hood was first mentioned in the novel Ivanhoe by Walter Scott in 1819. Robin Hood has been featured on film and television from 1908 to 2006. Percy Stow was the first to portray Robin Hood on-screen. Since then he has been portrayed by Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, Sean Connery, John Cleese, and Kevin Costner. There are plans for a forthcoming movie directed by Ridley Scott titled Nottingham.
