Sherlock Holmes image Author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created the fictional character known as Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is a detective known for his intellectual prowess and deductive reasoning. Sherlock Holmes has appeared in four novels and fifty-six short stories.

Conan Doyle modeled Sherlock Holmes after Dr. Joseph Bell. Joseph Bell was known for drawing large conclusions from small observations. Sherlock Holmes is the only fictional character ever inducted into the Royal Society of Chemistry. He was inducted due to his contributions to forensic investigation.

Sherlock Holmes’ confidant and biographer is Dr. John Hamish Watson. Holmes was portrayed by Basil Rathbone in fourteen films. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in print in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887, and his next appearance was in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew in popularity and was featured in a series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891. Holmes is known to use addictive drugs such as morphine and cocaine.
