Seven Samurai, or Shichinin no samurai, is the 1954 Japanese film by legendary director Akira Kurosawa. The events in the movie take place during the Warring States period in Japan. The seven main actors in the movie are masterless samurai, or ronin. The seven samurai are hired by village farmers to combat bandits who seek to steal their crops after harvest.

Seven Samurai is considered one of the greatest films of all time. The movie became one of Japan’s highest-grossing films ever. In addition to directing, Kurosawa also co-wrote the screenplay with Shinobu Hashimoto and Hideo Oguni. The seven samurai are portrayed by Takashi Shimura, Yoshio Inaba, Daisuke Kato, Minoru Chiaki, Isao Kimura, Seiji Miyaguchi, and Toshiro Mifune. Seven Samurai has influenced other films; The Magnificent Seven and Sholay. The film also influenced other filmmakers such as Roger Corman, George Lucas, and Sam Peckinpah.
