Simcity is the name of a franchise of computer and console city simulators that remain gaming classics to this very day. The brain child of famed game designer Will Wright, the original Simcity was first published in 1989 by Maxis Games. Since then, five different editions and sequels have been released and sold worldwide. The games are so influential that its spinoff,
The Sims, is now the best-selling computer game in history.
Simcity gives players absolute control over the planning and development of a city. Starting from scratch with an empty landscape, players are given a budget to develop the land with residential, commercial, and industrial zones. If you have sufficient funds, police, fire stations, educational facilities, airports, libraries, parks are available to build as well. A huge part of the game play involves micro-managing the budget of your city to make sure your expenses do not exceed your income. Simcity itself has no real way to “win” the game. The ultimate goal is to grow your city as much as possible and make sure it prospers. Numerous obstacles can stand in your way ranging from running out of money, to not enough jobs or education for your citizens, and also natural disasters.
