Sonic The Hedgehog is a video game character introduced in the video game series by Sega in 1991. Sonic The Hedgehog has appeared in comics, cartoons, and books, and is one of the best-known and most recognizable video game characters.
Sega wanted a game that would sell over a million copies, and a new mascot to replace Alex Kidd. Naoto Oshima, Hirokazu Yasuhara, and Yuji Naka are recognized as the creators of Sonic The Hedgehog. The research and development department AM8 submitted several designs for the new mascot, but none of them stuck. Oshima submitted a spiky teal hedgehog initially named Mr. Needlemouse. Mr. Needlemouse's pigmentation was changed to match Sega's blue logo, and his name was also changed. The rest, as they say, is history.
Sonic The Hedgehog was inducted into the Walk of Game in 2005 along with
Mario and Link. Sonic’s video games have sold in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. Sonic is a blue-furred 15-year old African pygmy hedgehog. He has the ability to run faster than the
speed of sound, and the ability to curl up into a ball when defending himself against enemies.
