Sony is a multinational conglomerate headquartered in Tokyo Japan. Originally founded in 1946, Sony is a world renown brand for consumer electronics, information technology, computer systems, finance, and entertainment as well. The name Sony comes from the Latin word sonus meaning “sound.”
Among Sony’s achievements are Japan’s first commercially manufactured transistor radio. While not the first radio, it was one of the best that allowed Sony to crack the American market and become a large player in the consumer electronics industry. Sony also developed and marketed the failed Betamax video format. It can be argued their Walkman paved the way for modern portable audio. Their Hi-8 video format became one of the most popular in the consumer camcorder market. Sony’s Playstation 2 is also the best selling video game console of all time.
Despite losing its place as the number one electronics company in the world to
Samsung, Sony continues to be an influential player.
