Billy Wilder directed and produced the 1960 American comedy-drama film The Apartment. Wilder also co-wrote the screenplay with I.A.L. Diamond. The movie was inspired by the one-act play Brief Encounter by Noel Coward. The actors in the movie include, Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray, Ral Walston, Jack Kruschen, David Lewis, Hope Holiday, and Edie Adams.
The Apartment was Wilder’s follow-up to Some Like It Hot. The movie was a commercial and critical success. The movie’s budget was $3 million; it grossed $25 million at the box office. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards; it won for Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
