The film is based on the first book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tokien and is set in Middle-earth. The movie was released on December 19, 2001 to critical and commercial acclaim. The film earned over $870 million worldwide and was the second highest grossing film in 2001. The Fellowship of the Ring won five BAFTAs, and was nominated for thirteen Academy Awards; it won four. According to the American Film Institute the movie is the second greatest fantasy film of all time.

Elijah Wood heads the cast as Frodo Baggins. Other members in the cast include, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Christopher Lee, Sala Baker, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchette, and Liv Tyler.
