
Director Peter Jackson returned to The Lord of the Rings film franchise for the 2003 fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The movie is based on the second and third volumes in The Lord of the Rings series by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Released by New Line Cinema on December 17, 2003, it was one of the most critically acclaimed movies and box-office successes of all time. The movie won all eleven Academy Awards for which it was nominated, and is the only fantasy film ever to have won the Oscar for Best Picture. The movie is the 2nd highest-grossing film of all time.
