The Menalist debuted on CBS in 2008. The police drama centers on an independent consultant, Patrick Jane, with the California Bureau of Investigation who has a unique gift of heightened observation. He used these skills to help solve crimes for the bureau. Jane is considered a sort of celebrity and often thought to be psychic.
While the department greatly admires and values Jane's abilities to solve crimes, his boss, Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon is not impressed. Each episodes involves Jane helping the team crack a case using his observation skills. There is also a recurring storyline involving Jane trying to find who killed his wife and daughter.
The show was an instant hit for CBS and is the only show of the fall 2008 season to be breakout hit.
