The Mummy is a film franchise that has seen several incarnations. The first incarnation was produced by Universal Studios and ran from 1932 to 1955. The Mummy was portrayed by Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney Jr. The second incarnation was produced by Hammer Films and ran from 1959 to 1971. The Mummy in the Hammer Films series was portrayed by Christopher Lee, Dickie Owen, Eddie Powell, and Valerie Leon.
The current incarnation of the Mummy series is back at Universal Studios. The current incarnation is less horror and more action. The Mummy in the current series was created with computer generated imagery by the company founded by George Lucas, Industrial Light & Magic. Mummies are featured in romance genres as undead creatures. Horror filmes popularized the idea of a curse associated with mummies. The discovery of King (Tut) Tutankhamun's tomb by archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 brought mummies into the mainstream.
